Just as the students have to show their knowledge of the reported speech, transforming sentences from reported speech to direct speech is equally important (and more difficult to achieve as the process is done backwards!). These examples from different exams appeared in the university entrance exam (SAT) in Andalucía (Spain) from 2007 to 2019.
